Sickbay Genesis - Deck 13
11 BCH 2235 Souls

The medical facility is large enough to hold a few dozen beds. Each bed is set with a curtain for privacy, a chair near the bed and any monitoring or medical aids needed. A nurses desk sits at the front near the hatch and a surgery area, Medical Officers area and supplies are on the far wall behind the desk. Nurses, doctors and medics man this area at any time day or night. Visiting hours are usually kept to the day and evening schedules, unless stated otherwise by medical staff.

Gaelan comes in from Corridor 13B.
Gaelan has arrived.

Zaharis is in what passes for 'his office', nothing grand. Small room, view of the gorgeous corridor beyond with some blinds to be dropped for the more private conversations. He sits and waits for Gaelan, shuffling through the large photographs taken by the scope.

Gaelan steps in the Sickbay, the Captain is definitely on a mission as he walks up to the entrance desk and raps his knuckles on the desk, "I need to see Captain Zaharis." The enlisted man at the desk points back to the office area where the CMO hides during slow times and the Captain nods. Making his way to the office he wraps his knuckles on the frame of the door and looks to the Doc holding up the images, "You asked to see me?"

Zaharis glances up from the films. "Hey. Yeah, come on in, have a seat. Forgot to tell you to bring your own brew. Help yourself, but no guarantees it won't kill you." He motions to the carafe sitting on his desk, and the extra mug nearby.

Gaelan looks to coffee and waves it off as he takes a seat, "Thanks, I have enough in my system right now to repower the Pandora for a month." Looking to the films and points to them, "Are those from this morning?" Looking between the films and the Doctor the Captain seems distinctly curious to what exactly this meeting is about. Good or bad.

Zaharis nods to the question. He turns a couple of the films around for Gaelan to see, should the man have any curiosity as to what his own larynx looks like. "In general, good news." He settles that off the bat. "We saw exactly where the damage is, and…it's pretty bad, but there -is- reconstructive surgery we can try."

Gaelan hmms audibly as he looks to the film not really making much sense of it. Looking back to Zaharis his eyebrows raise a little at the mention of the reconstructive surgery, "So what will require me to do and what if it doesn't work? Will I lose my voice permanently?"

"Well first I'm going to run a consult by Dr. Reighner," Zaharis explains, sitting back. "Just want to be sure it won't be detrimental where the oncology care is concerned. As for the surgery. I'm going to be straight, the chances of your getting your voice back one hundred percent is pretty low. The larynx is delicate, and the damage was extensive. But, the chance of recovering at least partially is around eighty percent. Yes, there's a chance it would fail altogether, leaving you in the same place as now, and I'd say about a one percent chance that it would do even more damage. You also need to know you'd be required to rest your voice completely for four to five days after we finish, so you could be on duty but, obviously, you'd have to adjust."

Gaelan nods slowly as he listens to the prognosis. Reaching up he rubs his chin, then his hand slides down to rub along his neck before looking back to the Doctor, "Do you think I should attempt it? I don't want to lose my voice all together and I am willing to do the recover time as required. I have good men below me that can cover things while I heal. Will I be able to talk at all during that recovery?"

Zaharis shakes his head. "Complete silence during that time, else you risk hurting yourself. Depending how well your body heals it could be as short as three days. It's hard to say before we can see what's going on." He pauses. "If we were down on a base I'd say yes, I would recommend attempting it. Up here it's a little different, of course. And with all going on with the Marines…it's going to be a judgment call as to whether you feel the potential benefits outweigh the risks here."

Gaelan nods again and leans back in the chair, "If you and Reighner feel that it can be done successfully up here on the ship then we will proceed with it. Now is the best time for me to take that risk I believe." Shifting slightly the Captain furrows his brow and looks back at the films laying Zaharis' desk.

Zaharis nods. "Alright. I'll have a chat with Reighner. He'll probably want to talk to you himself. Once we're all on the same page we can take care of the rest of the steps."

Gaelan nods and slowly rises, "Sounds like a plan Doc. Thanks for the update and looking into this for me."

Zaharis smiles, standing up as well. "No problem, Captain. That's what we do. I'll be in touch."

Gaelan rises from the back office and nods to the Captain. Passing a quick salute then turns to head towards the exit of the office and upon an immediate course of exit towards the Sickbay's Hatch'O'Freedom.
