Matt Reighner is a medical scientist on the Battlestar Genesis. Born, raised, and educated on Scorpia, he has spent most of his life there. He's dry, to the point, and dedicated to his career. As a researcher, he's well-accomplished, having authored dozens of publications in his lifetime. As a physician, he's competent, but not as dynamic as more dedicated clinicians. And as a Colonial Fleet officer, he barely fits the bill. He holds no strong opinion of the military, one way or another, and their relationship hinges on shared, mutual understanding — he receives his funding, and the military leverages him to receive more government support for their research programs.
Reighner's philosophy is based on the power of the basic sciences to advance fundamental knowledge of the human body, and through this knowledge the power to evolve improved health outcomes in specific systemic illnesses. In this vein, his research interests revolve around biosignaling pathways expressed in disease states, most notably cancer.
He has narrow interests beyond his research, among them racquetball, pyramid, and claimed competency in cooking. He was married and had two children, Abby and Michal, all of whom are presumed deceased following the Cylon attacks.
