Chief Medical Officers Office Genesis - Deck 13
112 ACH 23777 Souls

The office of the Chief Medical Officer is a small room, used mostly for consultations and review of sensitive patient materials than the paperwork of the Medical department, which goes through the Naval Administrative offices. Still somehow it has file cabinets along one wall stuffed full of papers, two chairs in front of a desk behind which a large leather chair is set. On the desk sits a computer terminal.
Sitting on the file cabinet is a Rod of Asclepius carved from two different types of wood. The rod is made from lighter wood, while the snake is darker. The eye of the snake is inlayed with tiny crystals so that it sparkles in the light. It stands on a smallish pedestal with a legend: Do no harm to thyself nor to others.

Zaharis has been at his desk working, though now he's piling up some files as he waits for Melia. For the occasion he's even put his blues on and the traditional doctor's coat over it, a rare thing for him.

Melia is in her Dress Grays this afternoon and looking nervous - but smiling. There's a lot to be said for a smile in these days in times. With Eli right behind her, she knocks quietly on the CMO's door.

Eli is also in dress greys for once, everything pressed and polished and s/he brings up the rear, standing behind Melia with an unreadable expression on her face as she waits quietly and occasionally nods encouragingly.

Yeah, the CMO didn't do grays. They itch. Zaharis smiles just a little when the small entourage knocks, and stands up, pushing in his chair. "Come in," he calls out clearly.

Mellie opens the door and holds it for Eli. Yes, Terrier's nibbling on her lower lip, but there's certainly a sense of anticipation. And twitchiness. The Grays DO itch.

Eli reaches out to hold the door, nodding firmly to Mellie to encourage her to go ahead, she's got the door. If she's itching…she probably doesn't realize it as she clears her throat and takes a deep breath.

There's a small black box on the right side of Zaharis' desk. He doesn't pick it up yet, letting them file in. Once they decide who's going in first.

Melia grins up at Eli, eyes twinkling. "Thank you," she tells the Sheriff with a soft laugh as she scoots past. Keystone Cops at the door averted. As she steps in, in front of the desk, she pulls to attention and salutes.

Eli lets the door shut behind them as she lingers near the door now, bringing up a hand in a smart salute, standing up straight and just waiting. And watching.

Zaharis returns their salutes, being first in the room to drop his hand again. "Petty Officer, Sergeant, good evening. P.O., if you wouldn't mind coming closer here." He steps out from behind his desk so she can face him without that between them.

Terrier takes a few steps closer, hand dropping, and looks up at the CMO with a grin. "Hopefully you won't bite," she says, trying to dispel a bit of her nerves.

Eli clasps her hands behind her back, bowing her head for a moment before raising it to watch this 'momentous occasion' with her usual stoic expression.

"I only bite officers, so enjoy the immunity while it lasts," Zaharis smirks, then folds his hands behind him. "Petty Officer Melia Sullivan. You have served the Battlestar Genesis Medic Corps with dedication, with pride, and with great courage. You've been an inspiration to your fellow enlisted, and a source of pride for the officers who have overseen your work. You embarked on an admirable journey to further your education, in preparation for what I and this bay hope will be future service as a licensed M.D. It's going to be a difficult road but so far you've shown nothing but readiness and willingness to do what's needed. P.O., will you confirm for me and for this witness that you have completed the criteria set for you to receive the equivalent of a pre-medical degree?"

And the moment has come. The smile fades from Mellie's face, turning into something more solemn and appropriate for the occasion. "I have completed the criteria set for me to receive the equivalent of a pre-medical degree," she states firmly, quietly. Of course, she's also blushing at what Zaharis said before that.

Eli's eyebrow quirks a bit but other than that, she's quiiiiiiiiieeeeeeeeeeeet and watching.

Not that Zaharis doesn't have all her work and grades on his desk, but pomp and circumstance and all that. "Then with permission from and on behalf of the Colonial Fleet, I am authorised to serve you a commission into the ranks of officer, Ensign grade. Do you accept?"

For a moment, it looks like she's not going to answer. But then Mellie swallows down the lump and nods, once. "I accept," she says, voice a little more quiet now. She glances briefly between Zaharis and Eli before focusing on the CMO once again.

Eli nods a little bit to Mellie when she glances her way before looking back straight ahead.

"Then likewise does the fleet accept your service." Zaharis pronounces the rote words of ceremony, opening the little box on his desk to reveal the shiny Ensign pins. Holding them in his palm he takes a step forward and removes her P.O. pins from her collar, replacing them with the new brass and then collar straightened again. "Congratulations, Ensign Melia Sullivan."

"Thank you, Sir," Mellie says quietly, standing still. "I can't quite believe this is true, truth be told."

Eli takes a deep breath and brings up a hand to salute discretely to Mellie before lowering her hand again and just bowing her head.

Zaharis puts the old pins into the box, for some lucky enlisted to inherit one day. "Keep aiming high, Ensign. You'll do just fine. You'll stay with the medic corps for now while you keep working on your studies, and we'll re-evaluate you periodically. Right now though, I don't believe you're on shift, so go do something fun and get ready to work." He smiles a little, then nods to Eli. "Sergeant, thanks for coming."

And…cue smile. Mellie's face absolutely lights up as she bounces on her toes. "Thank you, Major," she says quietly, then reaches into her pocket to pull out, of all things, a cigar, curling her fingers around it. "I can finally light this one up," she murmurs, then looks over at Eli, eyes twinkling. "Shall we, Sergeant?"

Eli raises his head and lets that icy gaze flick between Zaharis and Mellie and she nods first to Zaharis. "Of course sir, it was an honor sir." Then to Mellie, she nods once more. "Yes sir." Turning to prepare to open the door when tis time to exit.

Zaharis smiles, the expression stretching some of the scarring on his face. He tosses the box into a drawer and leans back against his desk, crossing one foot over the other.

Melia pulls into another salute, smiling across Zaharis' desk at him. "Thank you, Sir. For making it possible." And then she's turning to head out, skimming past Eli with a quiet "Quit that, damnit," muttered to the Sheriff.

Eli gives a farewell salute to Zaharis before she holds the door open for Melia, eyebrow raising a fraction before she just shakes her head slowly. "I believe you'll have to be more specific sir." Is murmured back softly before she slips out after the woman.

Zaharis returns salute and then smirks. "Get used to it, Ensign." As they head out he goes back behind his desk, shuffling through his papers once again.
